Integrating Oracle Database Development into your CI Processes

John Pocknell, Quest Software

With business driving the increasing adoption of agile methodologies such as Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment, the need for agile database tooling has become even more important. In many companies, the database development lifecycle has become the bottleneck in an otherwise agile delivery process. As such, database professionals are under increasing pressure to shorten delivery timelines even further, only increasing the stakes within an already high-stress, risk-averse environment. With little room for error in an environment where downtime can cost millions of pounds, the need for an agile database deployment process that can simultaneously reduce risk and deliver consistently reliable results is more important than ever.

Based on engagements with customers who are tasked with achieving these goals, this session will highlight some of the typical challenges they have in attempting to automate key database development tasks and integrate them into their existing CI infrastructure.

We will cover the following aspects of database development in Oracle and propose an effective solution:

  • Tracking code changes in source control
  • Automating PL/SQL unit testing
  • Automating effective code reviews
  • Web-based management code quality reporting
  • Integration with existing CI processes

At the completion of this session, you will have a much clearer idea how many of these challenges can be resolved today.
